I have a bit of a confession to make: I have no idea how to be a Christian. I mean, it seems simple enough; believe Jesus. But that’s really just the beginning. That’s what it takes to wear the label, but how we actually live out our Christianity from day to day isn’t so easy.
The Bible is full of wisdom and instruction on the subject and though I’ve committed to live by its principles I still find myself floundering at times. I wonder if I’ll ever get it right. And therein lies the problem. I’m entirely too self-focused. It’s not about me perfecting the rules and regulations, it’s about letting God transform me from the inside out. It’s really His work. I just have to be willing to lay my old man down and allow Him to create me anew.
When it comes down to it, being a Christian is really about loving God and loving people. It’s not about looking inward; it’s looking up to God and out to the people. We’re servants. We’re here to serve God and to honor God by serving others.
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. –Matthew 22:37-39
When we really love God we are willing to decrease so that He can increase (John 3:30). We will strive to do what He asks of us (John 14:15). When we really love God we will love people (John 13:35). When we really love people, we will have a burden to reach them for the Lord! This is true Christianity.
Lord, help me to love you better. Help me to love your people better. Help me to believe you for every area of my Christian walk. Teach me how to follow after you with everything I have. Guide me on the path and show me how to be a true Christian. I struggle with how to best to represent you. I don’t know how to do the things I know I should do, but you are a merciful patient teacher, and I thank you for that. Thank you for your unending love.
In His Love,

Hallelujah! This is an awesome post Rebekah. It seems most Christians pay little or no attention to Matthew 22:37-39: “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Thanks so much for sharing. God blesses.
I’m trying to get better at paying attention to it. God IS love. Without love we are nothing more than a clanging cymbal. The more we love, the more we express Him.
I have been struggling with my human failings of late. Thanks for the inspiring post. I need to quit looking at myself and my own shortcomings, and at God instead.
Yeah, it’s so easy for me to get caught looking inward. I tend to focus on my own shortcomings more than I focus on God’s incredible perfecting love. Thank God He is patient with us, right?
Amen!
And we also thank God for the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives…He is our Helper (John 14:16 AMP). God bless you.
Amen!! Praise the Lord! What would we do without the Holy Spirit guiding us?
Hey Rebekah,
Your honesty is incredibly refreshing. I was open with God about this awhile ago. Had a total break downthinking that i just “couldn’t get it right”. What happened that night changed my life. (my next blog is about it) but God spoke and said that the most important thing He wants from me is to love him. I had never heard of that before (as my bible knowledge is very little…only been a christian for a very little while). Then, about and hour later He took me to the scripture in Matthew that say “The first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength” I learnt a lot that day. Christianity is not a matter of conduct… it is a matter of allowing God to drawn you close to Him, just as you are… His love will change the rest. I feel sometimes God’s heart is so broken when He see’s his children hurting themselves because we feel we are not “perfect christians”. He never asked us to be, only to love Him.. the rest will follow. I love your honesty girl!!! looking forward to what else you write!
Your comment is a perfect example of how God guides us to Truth. Isn’t it wonderful that He gave you the revelation of what He wanted and then showed you where it was already in the Word? It was a perfect confirmation of what He had already told you. I love that!!
I know… gives a whole new idea of when people call it the “living word”. God fascinates me!!!
