Taking a Poll :)

I’m reading a book about the Holy Spirit. I like it so far; stay tuned for the review. But obviously, reading about the Holy Spirit has me thinking about the Holy Spirit, and I realized that I’ve heard 2 schools of thought. Chalk it up to all of my bouncing around from church to church (and denomination to denomination). The first is that we don’t get the Holy Spirit inside of us until we become believers. The second is that the Holy Spirit is inside of us from the beginning, and we simply don’t recognize it or listen to it. Both camps take their belief as a given – I mean, it’s one of the very basic things about it.

So I was just wondering what all you readers thought, and now I’m taking a poll. Did the Spirit always exist in us and we just hone our ability to listen to it? Or did we get the Spirit when we became believers? And while I’m at it, I’ll follow it up with another question: How did you come to your belief? Was there a verse you read about it or was it what you were taught?

Curious minds want to know. So either comment here or email me at being.rebekah.a@gmail.com.

God bless!

  1. I have always believed that the one receives the Holy Spirit when they believe that Jesus Christ is their savior. I was honestly quite unaware that there was another way of thinking about this. I am interested to hear about what your poll shows. 🙂

  2. God draws us spiritually so that we can come to Him, and once we accept Christ as Lord and Savior, then the Holy Spirit can indwell us. How can God – and the Holy Spirit is an aspect of God – indwell us while we’re still sinners and not cleaned by Christ’s blood? That would make no sense. I have never heard of that either–that actual Christians think that God can live in a person prior to justification.

As far as how I came to Christ, that’s interesting. I had been getting down about my life for a while. I was a mature adult and had accomplished career goals, for the most part, and I didn’t like the result. Relationships turned out to be deceptive and wrong, and there was nothing to live for anymore. I didn’t seem to belong in the world, and, I had–unknown to myself–been loving this music that a spiritual Christian wrote in order to praise God and draw people to God. Then one day, one second out of nowhere, Christ came to me and did this powerful thing inside me. There was no doubt about what happened or what it was, and from that moment forward I was a new person, a believer and follower of Christ. My spiritual eyes were opened so that I knew and felt that I was not of this world, and that I was moved to where I belonged. I was in the earthly realm, which was killing me, and then Christ moved me – or showed me that what I thought about where “I” was wasn’t the reality of things – and my life had a completely whole new meaning. Praise God and Amen!

(Looking back, I could see God drawing me in various ways, so it IS interesting. My parents seem to have been believers, but we never went to church and the subject of God rarely came up.)
